Why October is my Favourite Month for Weddings in Banff
Why October Weddings in Banff Are the Perfect Choice
If you’ve ever been to Banff in October, you know it’s a pretty magical time. I’ve photographed weddings here through every season, and October has a special place in my heart. Let me tell you why it’s my absolute favourite month for weddings and elopements in Banff and the Rocky Mountains of Alberta.
1. The Light
The lighting in October is just chef’s kiss. With the sun sitting lower in the sky, the light is softer, giving everything that dreamy, golden glow. Perfect for capturing those intimate moments without harsh shadows. It’s like nature’s filter, making my job easy and your photos stunning. Throw in some clouds for dramatic effect, and you really can’t go wrong!
2. The Colours
Banff in fall is a painter’s palette of rich golds, reds, and oranges. The trees put on a show, and the landscapes become vibrant backdrops. Imagine your wedding photos with the bold colours of autumn framing your love story. Yeah, it’s as breathtaking as it sounds. Even if we get snow (it happens!) the trees are rocking their gently frosted tips and looking absolute fire (I hope this reference lives on. Pookie & Jett forever).
3. Cooler Temperatures
Let’s be real—weddings in the summer heat can be a bit much. I don’t envy the grooms who suffer through a 30 degree wedding day in a suit and dress shirt. But in October? The weather is crisp, cool, and way more comfortable for everyone involved. No need to worry about makeup melting off or sweating through your suit. You can layer up without overheating, and your guests will thank you for the fresh mountain air - as long as you give them fair warning to prepare for the elements, haha.
4. The Lakes Are Still Unfrozen
October in Banff means the lakes are still those gorgeous shades of turquoise, making for epic shots by the water. Whether it’s Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Emerald Lake or one that is lesser known, the unfrozen lakes offer that iconic mountain-wedding look.
5. Fewer Crowds
Banff can be packed in the summer, but October brings a quieter, more peaceful vibe. With fewer tourists around, you can enjoy more privacy and intimacy for your ceremony and photos. It’s like you’ve got the whole place to yourself - okay not really, because tourists are here all year round BUT if you choose a weekday you might get lucky!
6. Later Sunrises & Earlier Sunsets
October brings later sunrises and earlier sunsets, which means we can capture those golden hour shots without rushing or staying out late. More time for those epic couple portraits, and you can still enjoy your reception without skipping a beat.
7. Accessories Galore
October weddings mean it’s time to break out the cozy and stylish accessories. Think chic shawls, cool jackets, boots, and even blankets for your guests. The crisp fall air allows you to layer up and add those unique touches that can take your wedding outfit up a notch. Fall fashion is a VIBEEEEE. .
8. Embracing the Elements
October weddings in Banff give you the chance to embrace the natural elements—whether it’s a light sprinkle of rain or a dusting of snow. The weather adds to the story, giving your photos an extra layer of authenticity and uniqueness.
In a nutshell, October in Banff is the perfect time to get married. The scenery is stunning, the light is perfect, and the whole vibe is cozy and intimate. If you’re thinking of an autumn wedding, trust me, Banff in October is where the magic happens.
